What a fantastic year we've had! I am so proud and grateful to be your child's music teacher. We have been learning so much and it has been fun to see the growth in the students so far in only a few short months. As we close out the year, please check out some of the pictures from Quarter 2 and our K/1 music performance which was spectacular!
Check out all the exciting things happening in the Monaco Music room! Kindergarteners and First Graders are working on being Tuneful, Beatful and Artful by singing, speaking, dancing, playing Click, Rattle and Scrape family instruments and listening to songtales. As we move into winter, we will be starting to prepare for our holiday performance which is scheduled for December 18th at 5:30pm. Please mark your calendars and join us for "The Gift of Song" where we will present our work for you!
Second graders have been eager to learn to read rhythms and melody and play the ukulele! Be on the lookout for some Take Home Pages for some of the songs we have been learning to read music notation, and ask your child about their ukulele learning as well.
Hello! If you've asked your child about music class at Monaco lately, they probably have mentioned our Mindfulness Practice. If not, you should ask them! Mindfulness has transformed my personal and professional life and I am happy to share a little bit of the practice at the beginning of each music lesson for children to enjoy the benefits of increased focus, attention, and calm.
What is mindfulness?
In my music classroom, we train our minds to rest on the present moment so that we can allow the best music to come from within our silent bodies. Although many religions practice mindful meditation, this secular practice is different in the way that it does not honor any specific deity or dogma, but simply involves paying attention to certain stimuli and disregarding others. It is my sincere belief that fostering a mindful practice benefits us, not only as musicians, but as healthy humans.
Practicing mindfulness has benefits to both your psychological health and physical health.
Psychological benefits include:

Free Guided Meditations- https://annakaharris.com/mindfulness-for-children/

Hello and welcome to another exciting year at Monaco Elementary! I am so happy to be Monaco's new music teacher and we are already having lots of fun in the music room! In all grade levels, we have been working on classroom rituals and routines, pre-assessing skills, and diving in to our first music units. Students in Second Grade will begin reviewing rhythms and learning Ukulele this fall. We will be working on a reward system called "Rainbow Ukulele" where students can earn colored beads for their progress. Every student will have a ukulele to play at school, but if you would like to purchase one for home, please follow this link. Kindergarten and First Graders will begin the First Steps in Music curriculum which consists of a multi-part musical "workout" that helps students become tuneful, beat-ful, and artful musicians.
This year, students in music will be graded on three categories: Participation (40%), Classwork(20%), and Assessment (40%). The participation grade consists of a 5-point daily grade average which I will post in Infinite Campus weekly. Classwork and Assessments will be posted individually as soon as I have them graded.
Thank you for welcoming me to Monaco and I look forward to working more with your family and your kids!
